Back to News News and Commentary When I heard the county was looking at spending roughly 100 million dollars to build a new high school in Orange Center I blew a gasket. My principal reason was the price has been said to be non conclusive. So in the end the cost will escalate. Most tax payers swallowed the need to raise the sales impact fee to cover the cost of new school construction cost. They grumbled, but put up with an outrageous increase in impact fees to assist in the financing to bond new schools. However it doesn't take an economist to look down the road to see that with increased student numbers, we may be financing as many as 15 new schools in the next few years. Given the expected flow of tax dollars, and assuming no interruption, it is my opinion the flow will not meet the demand putting a further strain on local option taxing authorities to cover the bill. What is need here is a real program to get us out of this mess. There needs to be a meeting between the state's board of education along with regional summits with county school boards to carve out a plan to executive the educational plant plan for the state. In coming commentaries I will outline some of these ideas, and examine them with you on the air. |
