While I have been blessed with wonderful opportunities to broadcast from the nations capitol these past few years (58 times at last count), I have become more skeptical of Washingtons being in touch with the American people.

 A case in point has been the reluctance of the Senate to follow through on a demand of the American people to better secure our borders. Rather than leap upon the opportunity to carry out the wishes of voters, Congress seems determined to undermine the need to provide security first, and placate business second.

 Even worse was the political wrangling involved with a vote to financial support the continuing war effort in Iraq.  Despite all evidence of a deepening involvement on a permanent basis there,  Congress chose this time to grant stand in an almost child like game of chicken.  In the end, the President was the winner,  holding firm to a conviction not to allow an end date for American military involvement to be a part of the spending measure.

 Through it all, there was an air of smugness not seldom witnessed by this observer. The upside of all this is our regional Congressional members appear steadfast in doing the right thing and their votes showed this. The disappointment seems to fall upon the Senate, seemingly made up largely of elitist business favor currying individuals who only seems to give the lip service of wanting national security while all the time trying to position themselves to be the most favorable tch with to future voters.  This is truly a sad picture.

I will watch with great interest the future votes of Florida Senators Bill Nelson and Mel Martinez. Nelson seems on the fence, Martinez has fallen through the fence.
